BEFORE YOU ORDER BULK SOIL OR MULCH

How long will it take
to move your soil
or mulch?

A driveway delivery still leaves a job between the pile and your garden.
Turn the volume you’re ordering into trips, hours and a plan you can save.

Moving time depends on your usable load and full round-trip time. For example, 10 cubic yards at 3 cubic feet per load means 90 trips. At 4 minutes per trip plus a 25% allowance, that is 7.5 planned hours.

These are example inputs, not a prediction of your pace. Replace them with your own figures below. Spreading, leveling and cleanup need their own time if they are not included.

1, 5 OR 10 CUBIC YARDS

How long to move
a yard of dirt?

There is no single reliable time for everyone. In this example, one cubic yard takes 9 trips and 36 minutes of complete moving cycles. With a 25% allowance, that becomes 45 minutes.

The table keeps the load and pace fixed so you can see what changes with volume. Soil and mulch may need different usable loads and cycle times.

Example only: 3 ft³ per trip · 4 min per full cycle
VolumeTripsMoving cyclesWith 25% extra
1 yd³90.6 h0.75 h
5 yd³453 h3.75 h
10 yd³906 h7.5 h

25% is an illustrative allowance, not a recommended fatigue or safety factor. Adjust your own inputs and plan other tasks separately. Check the calculation method.

THREE THINGS TO CHECK

A delivery date
is only the start.

01

Where will the pile actually land?

Ask your supplier to confirm the drop location and access conditions. Check the route from that spot to the work area, including gates. Do not assume the truck can reach the backyard.

02

How much do you move per trip?

Use the loose volume on your order and the load you can actually carry on that route. If the order is in tonnes, ask for its loose volume; this tool cannot infer it from weight.

03

What does one full cycle take?

Time a few complete cycles: loading, walking to the work area, unloading and returning to the pile. Use those observations as your starting input, then allow separately for breaks and slower later trips. If you cannot measure yet, compare the scenarios below and revise after trying your own route.

SCENARIOS, NOT AVERAGES

Same pile.
Different weekends.

For an illustrative 10 cubic yards and 3 cubic feet per load, you need 90 trips. Your measured cycle time makes a large difference.

10 yd³ · 3 ft³ per trip · 25% extra allowance
Full cycleMovingWith allowance
2 min3 h3.75 h
4 min6 h7.5 h
6 min9 h11.25 h

These inputs are arbitrary examples, not typical performance or safe load recommendations. The same volume of wet soil and mulch can weigh very different amounts.

BEFORE YOU SET ASIDE A DAY

What goes into
your moving time?

Does moving mulch include spreading it?+

The estimate covers only the tasks included in your cycle and allowance. Carrying mulch from the driveway to a bed is different from spreading it to the desired depth. Plan spreading, raking, leveling and cleanup separately when they take significant time.

How does the distance to my garden affect the estimate?+

Your complete round-trip time should include the actual walk out and back, as well as loading and unloading. A longer path, gate or slope can change that time. This tool uses your measured or explicitly assumed cycle; it does not infer a walking speed from distance.

Can I divide the time by the number of helpers?+

Not reliably. People may share a loading point, path or wheelbarrow, so adding a helper does not necessarily halve the time. This planner estimates one person’s scenario. Enter a separately estimated alternative in the quote comparison if you want to compare it.

What costs belong in a delivery, rental or help quote?+

Use the extra amount you would actually pay for that alternative, including relevant delivery or collection, fuel, setup and cleanup charges. Also enter your own remaining work time. Confirm costs and equipment suitability with the provider; this calculator does not make those assessments.

Compare the actual extra cost.

Closer delivery, equipment rental or hired help may change your own hours. Enter a real quote and your remaining time in the optional comparison above. Include setup, collection, fuel and cleanup where relevant. The result is extra cash per hour of your time saved; you decide whether it is worthwhile.
